In 1889 the Mayor of Blackpool, John Bickerstaffe, visited the Great Exhibition in Paris and was impressed with the newly constructed Eiffel Tower. On returning home he set up a committee of local businessmen who would raise funds for a similar design in the town. Architects James Maxwell and Charles Tuke were commissioned to design the structure and Blackpool Tower was opened to the public on 14th May 1894.
