In 1889 the Mayor of Blackpool, John Bickerstaffe, visited the Great Exhibition in Paris and was impressed with the newly constructed Eiffel Tower. On returning home he set up a committee of local businessmen who would raise funds for a similar design in the town. Architects James Maxwell and Charles Tuke were commissioned to design the structure and Blackpool Tower was opened to the public on 14th May 1894. The rest, as they say is history, well over 100 years of history in fact but how much do you really know about Blackpool Tower & Circus? Not surprisingly for a structure that is 518 feet 9 inches at its summit there have been highs and lows.
